About Of Whispers and Dances:
‘Of Whispers and Dances’ is Jamiia’s first recital and a part of an extensive exploration of her sound on the oboe. Jamiia sought to represent various voices during this 30-minute musical expedition, which influenced her choice in the repertoire. The setlist includes respected Brazilian percussionist and composer Ney Rosauro; Danish composer and violinist Carl Nielsen; the romantic-era, German composer and pianist Carl Reinecke; Belgian composer and violinist François Rasse; and contemporary, Japanese video game composer and pianist Yoko Shimomura. Through the work of these composers and the guidance of EMU oboe instructor Kristen Reynolds, Jamiia Franklin was able to showcase the oboe’s unique tone and applications in music.
Of Whispers and Dances Composers:
Ney Rosauro:
Rosauro (1952) is a contemporary Brazilian composer and percussionist who writes chamber, orchestral, and solo works for mallet and mixed percussion. He noticed a gap in repertoire and educational resources for mallet percussionists in Brazil, which motivated him to teach and compose.
Carl Nielsen:
Carl Nielsen (1865 – 1931) was a Danish violinist, conductor, and composer. Nielsen’s compositions have inspired many, especially his symphonies. His works contributed a lot to Denmark’s musical history, being widely credited as one of Denmark’s most accomplished and influential figures in music. Nielsen’s inspiration to compose music would come from Danish folk songs, dances, landscapes, and culture.
Carl Reinecke:
Reinecke (1824 – 1910) was a respected German pianist, conductor, teacher, and composer during the Romantic era of music. His musicianship was admired by many including Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Liszt. Further into his career as a pianist, Reinecke would compose works to perform with his colleagues at the Leipzig Conservatory, including his oboe, horn, and piano trio.
François Rasse:
François Rasse (1873 – 1955) was a Belgian violinist who garnered recognition as a teacher, conductor, music critic, and composer. As a composer and musician, Rasse had a great interest in the human voice, recreating the passion and emotions of the human voice through lyrical phrases for performers to sing through. Rasse’s most notable compositions are his string quartets and piano works, which have garnered recognition for their depth and artistic innovation.
Yoko Shimomura:
Yoko Shimomura (1967) is a Japanese composer, pianist, and arranger renowned for her work in the video game industry, especially for her compositions in the Kingdom Hearts series. Her career began after obtaining a degree in piano performance from Osaka College of Music. Despite plans to become a teacher, she’d sent music to video game companies recruiting at Osaka College of Music. Capcom interviewed Shimomura and offered her a job, which she accepted. Since her debut with Capcom, her contributions to the video game industry have been vast.
